Artist Statement
I am a formally trained artist whose creative medium is clay. I work from my home studio in the community of Chiltern.
Previous nursing work and continuing study of Buddhist philosophy inform my arts practice.
This practice is built on a search for subjective qualities of quiet beauty within utilitarian objects. I am very interested in perception and how we view the purpose of objects. This extends to the way people interact with them. I feel there is a lovely cohesion betwen things being both useful and beautiful.
Porcelain is my material of choice but I also explore earthy clays that allow the glazes to interact with the clay. I experiment and test the glaze components to arrive at the colour and surface that best suits the work, drawing inspiration from the environment in which I live. There is always an element of spontaneity within my work.
I also make installations of geometric forms, which, arranged as spontaneous constructions, allow an exploration of change and impermanence. These remind me of childhood play.
